The evaluation and selection process of Brazilian journals for the Latin American and Caribbean Literature on Health Sciences database (LILACS) is carried out annually, an activity in the context of Cooperation Term 93 (TC93), between the Pan American Health Organization and the Ministry of Health of Brazil for the development and improvement of BIREME/PAHO/WHO.
The process relies on the work of an ad-hoc evaluation Committee, the LILACS Committee, formed in 2009 and which has eight specialists from areas that make up the health sciences.
This committee met on December 17th, at the XXII Meeting of the LILACS Brazil Journal Evaluation and Selection Committee, to carry out the last stage of the journal selection process for the LILACS database, which started in July 2021.
As part of the evaluation process, the Committee meeting is the most important step, as it defines the indexing of a journal in the LILACS database, makes suggestions for improvement to the analyzed journals, recommends advances in the process and criteria of the Brazil collection and indicates the journals to be indexed in the ColecionaSUS database, coordinated by the Ministry of Health of Brazil.
In 2021, 13 journals were submitted, of which five were disapproved in the pre-analysis of standardization and scope, leaving eight journals for evaluation by the Committee. As a result of the content analysis, 3 journals were approved for indexing in LILACS through the implementation of the standardization and Committee’s recommendations, and five were not approved.
The journals conditionally approved were: Revista Ciências em Saúde; Revista Família, Ciclos de Vida e Saúde no Contexto Social; and Revista Segurança Alimentar e Nutricional.
At the Committee meeting, in addition to the evaluation of the journals, the preliminary model of the dashboard was presented with the results of the questionnaire on the profile of LILACS journals, carried out in August and September 2021 and which will be released in March 2022, in the first session of the webinars Buenas Prácticas en los Procesos Editoriales de Revistas Científicas para LILACS (Best Practices in the Editorial Processes for LILACS Scientific Journals). Furthermore, the appointment of the members responsible for the evaluation of the journals was agreed upon and it was proposed that, for the next year, the names of the ad hoc reviewers should also be indicated.
The journal articles indexed in LILACS correspond to almost 812,000 publications registered in the database, 82% of all contributions received from the Network of Cooperating Centers.
There are currently 911 journals from 21 countries and inclusion in the collection is carried out with the leadership of the LILACS Coordinating Centers, which carry out the process of evaluation and selection of periodicals at the national or regional level, with the support of the LILACS Journal Evaluation and Selection Committee of the country or thematic area.
The following are the journals from the countries that were evaluated according to LILACS criteria, selected and indexed in 2021:
