LILACS Brazil conducts evaluation and selection of new journals to its database

The process of evaluating and selecting journals from Brazil for the Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) database is carried out annually, an activity in the context of Term of Cooperation 93 (TC93), between the Pan -American Health Organization and the Ministry of Health of Brazil for the development and improvement of BIREME/PAHO/WHO.

The process begins with submission to the process when a pre-assessment of scope and format is carried out. Journals approved at this stage undergo an evaluation of format and endogeny, followed by an evaluation of scientific merit carried out by ad-hoc consultants and, later, at the meeting of the LILACS Committee, which has seven specialists from Health Sciences areas, with a new member (Silvia Berlanga de Moraes Barros, from the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the Universidade de São Paulo, representative of the Pharmacy area).

This committee met on the last December 12th, at the XXIII Meeting of the Committee for Evaluation and Selection of LILACS Brazil Journals, to carry out the last stage of the journal selection process for the LILACS database, which started in July 2022.

As part of the evaluation process, the Committee meeting is the most important stage, as it defines the indexing of a journal in the LILACS database, makes suggestions for improving the analyzed journals, recommends advances in the process and criteria of the Brazil collection and indicates the indexing of journals for the ColecionaSUS database, coordinated by Brazil’s Ministry of Health.

In 2022, 15 journals were submitted, of which three failed the standardization and scope pre-analysis, leaving twelve journals for the Committee’s evaluation. As a result of the content analysis, four journals were approved for LILACS indexing upon implementation of standardization and Committee recommendations, and eight were not approved.

The journals approved with restrictions were: Archives of Pediatric Neurosurgery, Brazilian Journal of Oncology, Headache Medicine and Revista Brasileira de Farmácia Hospitalar e Serviços de Saúde.

This year there were additions to the endogeny criteria, shown on the dashboard (Figure 1) with tables that indicate how many editors and reviewers were also authors of the evaluated articles.

The Committee comprises the following members:

  • Adeilton Alves Brandão, Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, representative of the area of Biomedical Sciences.
  • André Luiz Félix Rodacki, Universidade Federal do Paraná, representative of the area of Speech Therapy, Physical Education, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy and Sports Medicine.
  • Antônio de Pádua Pithon Cyrino, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, representative of the area of Public Health.
  • Edna Frasson de Souza Montero, Universidade de São Paulo, representative of the area of Clinical and Surgical Medicine.
  • Maria Helena Palucci Marziale, Universidade de São Paulo, representative of the Nursing area.
  • Sigmar de Mello Rode, Universidade Estadual Paulista Júlio de Mesquita Filho, representative of the area of Dentistry.
  • Silvia Berlanga de Moraes Barros, Universidade de São Paulo, representative of the area of Pharmacy.

Journal articles indexed in LILACS correspond to almost 856,000 publications registered in the database, 83% of all contributions received from the Network of Cooperating Centers.

Currently, LILACS indexes 896 journals from 21 countries and the inclusion in the collection is carried out with the leadership of the LILACS Coordinating Centers in the countries, which carry out the evaluation and selection process of journals at the national or regional level, with the support of the Committee of Evaluation and Selection of LILACS Journals from the country or thematic area.

Below, the journals from the countries that were evaluated according to the LILACS criteria, selected and indexed in 2022:

Argentina: Bioquímica y Patología Clínica

Bolivia: Revista Científica Memoria del Posgrado

Colombia: Revista de Investigación e Innovación en Ciencias de la Salud

Peru: Revista de Investigación de la Universidad Norbert Wiener and Revista Peruana de Ciencias de la Salud
