Created in 1953 to serve the new Ministry of Health of Brazil, the Library completes 70 years of recognized history and keeps updated its mission of preserving the memory of public health in the country. Part of this history is shared with BIREME, which, since 2001, has supported their collection on the internet, and with the development of information products and services.
Results for the last half of 2023 refer to the third phase of the technical cooperation established since 2010 between BIREME and the Municipal Health Department of São Paulo, through the VHL SMS São Paulo. 2023 was marked by important events for public health and PAHO, with the start of Dr Jarbas Barbosa’s term as director of the Organization in January and the announcement of the end of the COVID-19 global emergency in May. At BIREME, the first year of director João Paulo Souza’s tenure included the approval of the new Strategy 2023-2025, which guides the use of scientific information for health action while accelerating the digital transformation of the sector toward PAHO’s mission of Health for All. The II National Meeting of EVIPNet Brazil was held in Brasilia on November 21 and 22, with more than 200 participants, including BIREME. The event promoted discussions on the institutionalization of Evidence-Informed Policy (PIE) and its application in favor of sustainable and equitable development of the Unified Health System.
Check out the results achieved by BIREME in the context of Cooperation Term TC93 (Part I). Developed in coordination with the Ministry of Health of Brazil and PAHO/WHO, the information and knowledge management carried out by BIREME impacts the entire health network of publication, organization, access, and use of scientific and technical information, facilitating the use of evidence in clinical decision-making and management processes. The reports also highlight the regional reach of the Center’s activities, with replicable and reusable activities, products, and services at the local, national, and regional levels.
Held in India on August 17 and 18, the event brought together policymakers, researchers, healthcare providers and civil society to discuss strengthening the evidence base for traditional medicines. The aim is to encourage the integration of proven beneficial interventions into health systems, allowing countries to implement quality control and monitoring policies for T&CM practices, professionals and products. In 2023, BIREME starts the second year of the 2022-2023 Biannual Work Plan. Check out the progress recorded in projects, products and services, with results that highlight institutional strengthening and continued support for the countries in the Region, by expanding and strengthening access to information and scientific evidence for decision-making in health.
Strategies to strengthen the sector and prioritize applications in digital health and industry 4.0 were highlighted in the agenda of the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO/WHO), Dr. Jarbas Barbosa, in São Paulo. International Nursing Day 2023 calls on countries to discuss the capacity, availability and distribution of these professionals to expand access and coverage of Primary Health Care, with special attention to the most vulnerable populations.
World Health Day, celebrated each year on April 7, marks the founding anniversary of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 and each year focuses on a specific public health concern. In addition to focusing on ways to achieve Health for All, which is this year’s theme, WHO celebrated its 75th anniversary under the theme “75 years improving Public Health”.
