Nicaragua works on strengthening the health information component

Since Nicaragua is one of the PAHO/WHO key countries, it also constitutes a priority for BIREME, and in this occasion the country received a visit from the Director of the specialized Center on Health Sciences Information, Dr. Diego González, who held strategic meetings with national counterparts related to the scientific and technical information component, as well as with the technical team of the PAHO/WHO office in the country. The reactivation of the Virtual Health Library and the adoption of tools for strengthening information systems and scientific communication were the objectives of the work undertaken.

Strengthening capacities in health scholarly communication in Paraguay

With the objective of offering scientific editors, researchers, health professionals and post-graduate students the most important elements to keep in mind while writing scientific articles, PAHO Paraguay, through its Knowledge Management team, in collaboration with the Instituto Nacional de Salud of the Ministry of Health and BIREME/PAHO/WHO, organized a Workshop on Scholarly communication in Health. Dr. Lilian Calò, BIREME Scholarly Communication Coordinator, oversaw the activity, which took place on September 17-19.

Administration and its effective support for the technical cooperation of BIREME/PAHO/WHO

Collaborators from the Administration and Planning Management (GA) of BIREME participated at the Regional Training on Operational Excellence in Procurement, in September 2019, which contributed to the development of collective and individual competences, thus collaborating with the efficiency of the management and administration activities, as well as with the Center’s operations for the effective implementation of its technical cooperation program in the Region.

Representatives from ULAN, Medical School of Angola, visit BIREME

A delegation from the Medical School of the Universidade Lueji A’Nkonde, from Malanje, Angola (ULAN), visited BIREME on September 6th, in order to identify joint actions to strengthen the School’s scientific and technical information management, as well as that of North Luanda and Angola. Visitors were presented to the lines of work of the Center and discussed ways of supporting ULAN to strengthen its capacities in health information and scientific communication.

BIREME joins the Wellness Week celebration

Since its creation by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in 2011, Wellness Week has served as a call for action to fight non-transmissible diseases and promote health through the generation of healthy environments. BIREME is known for stimulating the practice of healthy lifestyle habits among its collaborators yearlong, and during Wellness Week 2019, activities were organized to celebrate the campaign and contribute to the health and well-being of collaborators and their families.

The Brazilian Ministry of Health, PWR Brazil, and BIREME discuss results of technical cooperation

Representatives of the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Health of Brazil met at BIREME in order to review the results and discuss the specific objectives of the next 12 months, within the context of Addendum VI of the 95th Technical Cooperation Term (TA6/TC95) between the Ministry of Health and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization in Brazil (PAHO/WHO Brazil) for the “Improvement of the Management of the Executive Secretariat of the Ministry of Health of Brazil”. The macro activities to be developed during the term of this TC were also defined.

PAHOERC adopts the ProEthos platform – a development coordinated between the Regional Bioethics Program and BIREME

The PAHO Ethical Review Committee (PAHOERC), responsible for reviewing research performed with human beings, has adopted the ProEthos platform as its electronic management system for research proposals. ProEthos, developed by the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná, Brazil, and BIREME/PAHO/WHO, allows researchers and members of PAHOERC to manage the submission, review and ethical approval of research protocols, including their monitoring, through a safe Web environment.

Promoting the use of evidence in health locally

A recent experience is taking place with the participation and collaboration of BIREME for the reduction of maternal mortality in the Brazilian state of Piauí. Considering the relevance of this topic in the state, BIREME contributes with the elaboration of a synthesis of evidence, especially with identifying and analyzing evidence in terms of quality, equity and implementation of selected options according to the context and characterization of the problem.

RELACSIS, IS4H, and BIREME: Together on the path towards strengthening information systems for health

Representatives of more than 30 countries of the Region met in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to participate at the IX Meeting of the Latin American and Caribbean Network for the Strengthening of Information Systems (RELACSIS). The Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information, BIREME, Specialized Center of the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization, was present at the meeting, represented by its Director, Dr. Diego González, and the Manager of Information Technologies, Renato Murasaki.

Strategic plan for the strengthening of the VHL Network Brazil

The Executive Committee of the VHL Brazil held its X Meeting in August with the objective of reflecting on the governance of the Brazil VHL Network, evaluating the Collective Work Plan for the first semester of 2019 and defining priorities for the second semester, with the main objective of strengthening the networking. The meeting was attended by representatives from 15 Thematic and Institutional Instances of the VHL, as well as by representatives of PAHO Brazil and of the Ministry of Health, which acts as the Network’s Executive Secretariat, in collaboration with BIREME.
