Pilot study to strengthen LILACS journals in Honduras

BIREME, through the LILACS database coordinating team, with the support of the PAHO Office in Honduras and the Country Coordination of the VHL and LILACS, carried out a pilot study with the editors of scientific journals in Honduras, which resulted in their improvement of and an award for Innovative Experience in the context of the response to covid-19 and public health granted to the Revista Médica Hondureña.

World AIDS Day 2022 focuses on addressing inequalities

The inequalities which perpetuate the AIDS pandemic are not inevitable; we can tackle them. This World AIDS Day, 1 December, UNAIDS – Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS co-sponsored by PAHO – is urging each of us to address the inequalities which are holding back progress in ending AIDS.

Partnership between PAHO Brazil and BIREME at the ABRASCO 2022 Congress

The 13th Brazilian Congress of Collective Health, organized by the Brazilian Association of Collective Health – Abrasco – in 2022 had the theme ‘Health is democracy: diversity, equity and social justice’ and was held in Salvador, Bahia, on November 19-24, 2022. The event was supported by the PAHO/WHO Officet in Brazil and BIREME, which participated in its stand, serving as a focal point for the promotion of its products and services, publications by PAHO’s technical areas and book launches from the Organization.

BIREME supports FI-Admin training for Jamaica and Guyana

In the context of the BIREME/PAHO/WHO technical cooperation in Latin America and the Caribbean in the management of technical and scientific information in health and in follow-up to the actions to move forward with the initiative of the Caribbean Virtual Health Library, training took place in early November on how to use the FI-Admin tool, developed by BIREME, to enter data into the MedCarib database.

BIREME participates in the Sixth National Conference on Indigenous Health

The 6th National Conference on Indigenous Health (CNSI) took place from November 14 to 18, 2022, in Brasília, promoted by the National Health Council (CNS) and the Special Secretariat for Indigenous Health Care (SESAI). BIREME participated in the event through the PAHO/WHO Brazil booth, where it made presentations to promote products and services related to Indigenous Health.

Nursing VHL congregate its governance committees in November 2022

In November 2022, the Nursing VHL congregated two of its important governance committees: the International Advisory Committee and the Advisory Committee of Brazil. The 2nd Meeting of the International Advisory Committee, called XV Reunión de la Red Internacional de la BVS Enfermería, took place virtually on November 7, during the 17th Coloquio Panamericano de Investigación en Enfermería, within the scope of the XV Reunión de Redes Internacionales de Enfermería, on the 6th -7th of that month, in Miami, Florida, in the United States.

Training in the context of the Research4Life program reaches 30 countries

The PAHO/WHO Knowledge Management (KM) area is part of the Department of Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health (EIH), which also includes BIREME. Among its workstreams is the Digital Literacy activity, which promotes periodic training for staff in PAHO/WHO Offices and Centers in the context of the Research4Life Program (HINARI). BIREME has been participating in the training activity focused on the search for scientific and technical literature in the LILACS database.

BIREME joins the ‘Education to protect tomorrow’ campaign for World Diabetes Day 2022

November 14th marks World Diabetes Day, celebrating the birth date of Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin in 1922. The worldwide celebration is an opportunity to raise awareness about the impact of diabetes on people’s health and highlight the opportunities that exist to strengthen the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diabetes. BIREME provides relevant and updated information on diabetes for health professionals, researchers, and the population in general, as a way of contributing to the awareness and prevention of this disease.

João Paulo Souza is the new director of BIREME/PAHO/WHO

Epidemiologist and researcher Dr. João Paulo Souza is the new director of BIREME/PAHO/WHO. The formal process of Transfer of Direction, according to the Organization’s methodology, took place on October 17 and 18, 2022, when Dr. Sebastián García Saisó – director of the Department of Evidence and Intelligence for Action in Health (EIH/PAHO) and interim director of BIREME since October 2021, transferred the Center to the new director.

BIREME and PAHO/WHO participate in HSR2022

Celebrating 120 years of solidarity in advancing the health and well-being of populations, leaving no one behind, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) actively participated in the 7th Global Symposium on Health Systems Research (HSR2022), held in Bogotá, Colombia, from October 31 to November 4. PAHO’s stand at the event was a space for the demonstration and dissemination of the main products developed by BIREME to support decision-makers in health, in addition to PAHO publications.
