The Executive Committee of the VHL Brazil held its X Meeting in August with the objective of reflecting on the governance of the Brazil VHL Network, evaluating the Collective Work Plan for the first semester of 2019 and defining priorities for the second semester, with the main objective of strengthening the networking. The meeting was attended by representatives from 15 Thematic and Institutional Instances of the VHL, as well as by representatives of PAHO Brazil and of the Ministry of Health, which acts as the Network’s Executive Secretariat, in collaboration with BIREME.

BIREME attends public health events in Brazil
BIREME attended the main Public Health events in Brazil, in addition to participating at conferences and contributing to their organization. Its presence offers the possibility of diffusing the products of the Center’s technical cooperation through the demonstrations, distribution of publications and quick courses that take place in the stands of the events.
Technical cooperation of BIREME/PAHO with the WHO – Global Index Medicus
Representatives of Information and Knowledge Management of the WHO Regional Offices, focal points of the Country Offices and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), coordinated by the Library and Information Network for Knowledge of the WHO, met at Organization’s Headquarters in Geneva in order to hold the meeting of the Global Library Group – GLG. BIREME was represented by Renato Murasaki, Manager of Methodologies and Information Technologies and Databases Administration, who coordinates the Center’s technical cooperation activities regarding the Global Index Medicus.
Brazilian Ministry of Health and BIREME work together to strengthen and improve BIREME’s work
Representatives from different areas of the Ministry of Health visited BIREME with the objective of getting acquainted with the Center’s functioning, priorities, products and services, as well as for discussing the expected results, activities, indicators and goals of the second Addendum to Cooperation Term 93, which is aimed towards the “Development and Improvement of the Latin American and Caribbean Center on Health Sciences Information within the context of Information and Knowledge Management of the 2030 Agenda and Universal Health”.
Searching with DeCS terms is a guarantee of best outcomes
The 2019 edition of the Descriptors in Health Sciences vocabulary – DeCS 2019 – was launched in June with some technological and terminological developments. Developed from the NLM’s MeSH – Medical Subjects Headings – vocabulary, DeCS serves as a unique language in the indexing of articles in scientific journals, books, conference proceedings, technical reports, and other types of materials. It is also used in the search and retrieval of scientific literature in the sources of information available in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) such as LILACS, MEDLINE and others.
Mozambique strengthens its health information management with the support of BIREME
Librarians from BIREME were in Maputo, Mozambique on July 15 to 19, in order to give a training workshop for professionals and technicians, with the objective of strengthening the national database and developing a Virtual Health Library for the Portuguese speaking countries of the Region. The activity was an initiative of the National Institute of Health of the Ministry of Health of Mozambique, with the support of the WHO Office in the country.
BIREME attended the 50th anniversary of the Central Library of the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires
BIREME went on a mission to Argentina in order to diffuse the importance of the LILACS database, a key tool for decision making based on evidence and for the reduction of inequities in health. The visit took place during the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Central Library of the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. Local authorities, professionals and users of the Hospital, and colleagues from the Red Nacional de Información en Ciencias de la Salud (RENICS) attended the event.
The São Paulo State Health Secretariat and BIREME launch new information products
The São Paulo State Health Secretariat and BIREME launch new information products, portals and access interface in the Information and Knowledge Network Virtual Health Library (BVS RIC), with the presence or virtual participation of researchers, coordinators of the Technological Innovation Nuclei (NIT) and of the Health Technology Evaluation Nuclei (NATS), librarians, guests and employees from universities, from the São Paulo Municipal Health Secretariat and companies from the health segment, among others.
Socorro Gross, PAHO/WHO Representative in Brazil, visits BIREME
The PAHO/WHO Representative in Brazil, Dr. Socorro Gross Galiano, visited BIREME for the first time on June 6th, in order to get acquainted with its technical cooperation program, management and insitutionality, and to participate in activities aimed towards the institutional strengthening of the Center. Under the leadership of Diego González, Director, and with the participation of BIREME managers and collaborators, the program also included the participation of the Sub-mayor of Santo Amaro, Janaína Lopes de Martini and of the advisors from the Conselho Municipal do Meio Ambiente, Desenvolvimento Sustentável e Cultura da Paz (CADES) of Santo Amaro. Everyone was informed about successful local initiatives that are underway in Santo Amaro for promoting health and cooperating with the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda.
Peru hosted the V International Congress on Medical Education
The V International Congress on Medical Education took place in Lima, Peru, from May 30 to June 1st. The Congress was organized by the Asociación Peruana de Facultades de Medicina and had over a thousand participants, among which were students, university teachers and deans of medical schools. BIREME had a relevant participation in the scientific programming of the event and was represented by its Director, Dr. Diego González, by the Coordinator of Scientific Communication, Dr. Lilian Calò and by the Librarian from the field of Information Services, Elisabeth Biruel.
